Newsletter #6: Mar 2017

Autism 30 March 2017 Newsletter
I was watching an amazing annual para-taekwondo event, which was held on Saturday February 19th at Hugh McRoberts Secondary in the city of Richmond, by Sirota's Alchymy Martial Arts And Life Skills Centre. I saw the martial arts participants on that day receiving their trophies and certificates. After competing in the 5 activities, they took their picture with the Principal - and had huge smiles on their faces and pride in their stance. This was heart warming and inspiring, and each shined brightly. At each station they were encouraged and applauded for a job well done. In the Principal Master Sirota words: “we removed the 'dis' from our vocabulary and replaced it with 'Everything is Possible!' - and this was truly achieved.
I’m also signing my child up for another sporting activity with Canucks Autism Network after thoroughly enjoying the last one he enrolled in, as well as looking at the long list of sporting activities available with Special Olympics this spring term.
As I’m watching, signing up for, and making my selections, I’m reminded of how fortunate we are here in British Columbia. This province has wonderful organizations, like the ones mentioned, that do such great work to give our community members an opportunity to participate and get involved. Not only do they get to learn new skills, develop confidence, have fun, and make friends, they also experience being part of a team, being competitive, along with their friends and family joining in the fun.
We, the team at Autism 30, would like to thank all the organizations, coaches, and volunteers who work with our community members and their families in our province. You are very much appreciated and we strongly encourage others to join in the fun.

Quote of the month:
“Although people with autism look like other people physically, we are in fact very different… We are more like travellers from the distant, distant past. And if, by our being here, we could help the people of the world remember what truly matters for the Earth, that might give us quiet pleasure,”
